How to Prevent 'Beard Itch'
The dreaded initial itch:
This occurs in the early stages of growing a beard. It can last for up to 2 weeks. It can be so irritating that a lot of men give up trying to grow a beard at this stage and start shaving again! This initial itching is caused when your facial hair starts to grow longer, and the sharp edges of the hair scrape against the edges of the follicle. Further itching occurs in the days (and nights) that follow because the facial skin that used to be exfoliated by shaving is now becoming dry. Any further hair growth will take more of the natural moisture out of your skin.
The solution:
- Brush the new growth frequently with a good quality brush. This will remove any dry dead skin cells and promote blood circulation.
- Keep the beard clean with a dedicated beard wash/shampoo (even in the early stages). Don’t ever use a shampoo designed for head hair on your beard. The harsh chemicals in hair shampoo will strip your beard of the natural oils, drying out your skin, and causing further itching. (Remember to brush your beard before each shampoo.)
- Use quality beard oil. This will nourish and moisturise the skin whilst keeping the hairs healthy and promoting beard growth. Choose beard oil that contains Jojoba and Argan oils as the main ingredients. Jojoba oil is very similar to your skin's natural oils, and Argan oil will soften and thicken facial hair.
Itchiness in a fully grown beard:
A poorly conditioned beard will have coarse, unruly hairs that will rub against the dry, untreated skin underneath causing a persistent itch. The skin underneath your beard is susceptible to dandruff, dryness, irritation and more. It must to be kept moisturised. Quality beard oil is specially designed to nourish and hydrate both the skin and beard.
Three easy steps to banish the itch for good:
- Brush the beard regularly - with a quality beard brush.
- Keep the beard clean - with a dedicated beard shampoo.
- Nourish the skin and beard - with quality beard oil.
